Mrs. Aichele's first grade class at Coal City Early Childhood Center did an apple investigation and were the investigators to help "Farmer Brown find his prize apple."
The students learned about apple life cycles and parts of an apple. They used cubes to measure the height of their apple and string to measure the circumference of the apples. They estimated if the apples would sink or float, and they discovered they all float. Next they guessed what shape would be inside the apple (heart, square, star, triangle, or pentagon). When they cut an apple open they discovered it had a star shape in it.
As part of the investigation, the students also estimated how many seeds would be inside the apple, most thought two or three, but there were six. They then drew pictures of apple trees in spring, summer, fall and winter and then did a taste test of red, yellow and green apples, and graphed which ones they liked. The green apple had the most likes with four.
