Students favorite part of the school day

The students in Mrs. Wren and Miss Jackman’s co-taught Kindergarten class have been working so hard on adding and subtracting within 10. Before Christmas, they practiced using a variety of strategies to learn what works best to solve addition problems, and this month they are working on deepening our number sense by breaking our numbers apart.

“Each day we begin our math lesson with a number talk, and our students have excellent conversations that revolve around counting, breaking numbers apart, and solving simple addition or subtraction problems. We have seen so much growth in their understanding and problem solving skills since we began having these short number talks. Our number talks always end with a game or activity to practice an important skill, and I think we all agree when we say, that’s usually our favorite part of our math lesson! We play games like counting sparkle and addition fact around the world, and it is so fun watching everyone participate, practice, and encourage each other,” Mrs. Wren said.

This week, the students created their own equations by filling ten frames with two different color hearts. They completed a craft, wrote their equations, and connected their numbers using a number bond. The  students work so hard every day to talk with their peers about problem solving strategies, and they are growing daily in their independent practice!
