Mrs. Stewart’s first graders have been busy with Thanksgiving activities!
In social studies, the class has been learning about needs and wants, and discussing the importance of giving to others. As part of their Holiday Giving Project, the students are collecting items such as soaps, deodorant, shampoo, crossword books, Kleenex, and highlighters with push caps. These donations, along with handmade cards, will be delivered to local nursing homes.
To celebrate the season of giving and friendship, Mrs. Stewart’s class joined Mrs.
Wilkinson’s class for a lesson on Native Americans and Pilgrims. Mrs. Stewart’s students represented the Pilgrims while Mrs. Wilkinson’s class learned about Native Americans. Working in small groups, the children taught each other facts about their daily lives, the journey to America, and the events of the First Thanksgiving. They also enjoyed a fun themed snack—“dirt” (Oreos™), “corn” (candy corn), and “fish” (Swedish Fish™)—to represent how Native Americans taught the Pilgrims to plant crops.
Of course, Thanksgiving wouldn’t be complete without the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade! Students learned interesting facts about the parade and even created their own balloon designs. They proudly showcased their creations in a parade through the Early Childhood Center.
To wrap up the holiday festivities, the class made colorful turkeys and wrote lists of the people and things they are thankful for to share with their families. They also created a class book titled How to Cook a Turkey—a collection of entertaining (and not kitchen-tested!) recipes. You can find their imaginative turkey recipes in last week’s edition of The Coal City Courant and on the school district website.
